Why is Joy Womak such a controversial figure in ballet?

Well...

Over the years she has ruined her reputation through various statements, actions, and ongoing behaviours.

She graduated BBA and claimed she was the first American to do that, idk how true that statement is. BBA has a reputation for taking on any foreigner who will pay, the foreigners are placed in a different class from the Russians who trained there from childhood, and they don't graduate with the same technical finesse. Joy, however, was in the Russian division, she clearly has had that level of technical ability at some point in her life. She graduated at the top of her class and went into the Bolshoi, where she expected to be a soloist from day 1. She was not. And she didn't like that, she claimed (publicly, on interviews) that she was asked to sleep her way up or pay a large sum of money if she wanted roles. I can't tell you how much of that is true, I was a kid at the time and honestly have no interest in looking that up. She left Bolshoi in 2014 (in the midst of all the Filin acid attack mess) with her name already tainted and went on to Kremlin Ballet.

I first followed her YT channel back when she was in Kremlin, before she was a soloist. She claimed she was always a principal dancer when she was a coryphee at best. I think there was some sort of agreement that her contract would be that of a soloist to sort out some visa problems, but her workload (and pay as far as I could understand) was that of a coryphee. Her "power" within the company was that of a coryphee as well, not a newbie in the corps, but definitely someone who should respect the higher ranks, and recognize their experience, talent, and seniority. She did none of that. She was constantly complaining about not getting roles while claiming she was better than other dancers who did solos, called other dancers lazy, she accused a prima of "accidentally" hitting her and making her foot bleed, she publicly called another principal a drunk, she claimed that a pianist wouldn't play for her rehearsal because she's American, and she filmed and posted company classes for years, while being told repeatedly to stop from colleagues. Eventually, she did get promoted and then continued complaining about the rehearsal studios, the pay, not getting the roles she wanted, and on and on... The thing is, Kremlin is one of the most prestigious Moscow ballet companies, in the center of Russia, who get graduates from VBA, BBA, Perm, and wherever else they want. If you don't like it, honey, you're replaceable. I don't think leaving was 100% Joy's choice, I wouldn't be surprised if some other members went up to management and had a few words.

After Kremlin, she went to Universal Ballet in Korea, where she again claimed to be a principal, barely posted anything, and left after a year. She worked as a freelancer for a while, in one of those companies that tour Europe and sleep in a bus. She then went on to Boston Ballet, where she was corps de ballet, and was really unhappy about that. Joy thinks that from some divine source she's owed the title of prima ballerina, she thinks she's the next Anna Pavlova, so when her contract in Boston was done, she went back to Russia to Astrakhan Ballet, where her wish finally came true, she was a prima, she danced all the leading roles, her genius was finally appreciated. And then Russia invaded Ukraine.

She, like many foreigners dancing in Russia, got offered a contract in Europe, in her case, a part-time corps contract in the Paris Opera Ballet. Idk if part time is the correct term, basically she was hired as an extra for a specific number of shows, I think it was Ballet Imperial and Who Cares? Anyway, POB has a "competition" (concours) to get promoted, so basically Joy had to present the selected variation (it was something from Lacotte's Paquita), which she did, and didn't get a permanent corps contract. So now she lives in Paris, her "favourite city" (a few years ago, that was Moscow) and does various projects as a freelancer.

She has had a bunch of movies about herself, an autobiography, apparently she runs some non-profit now (wtf is the Joy Womack Foundation), and has a "company" of some sort. Also she used to have some sketchy protein bar company, the Prima Bar (the obsession with being a prima continues). She was recently selected as a member of the Prix de Lausanne 2025 jury (rolling my eyes), which I find ridiculous because she's a no one in the ballet world. I mean, last year they had Darcey Bussell.

In general, I think she's sketchy, dishonest, never content with what she has, and she gives off mlm/the grind never stops vibes. Not a fan. It's insane I've been writing for an hour, and it's just an overview of the most prominent points. I absolutely have forgotten some things.

But I do live for the drama, so keep the juicy questions coming 🤣

So, if one moves GENE from Jr.Exile to Founding Exile (my nickname for that set because LDH didn't give us one), that puts 4 groups per subgroup.

And I feel like there's actually - four distinct lines of inheritance of a variety going on. (tbeh, my reasoning is strongest with the Exile/RMPG/TJBB line and goes downhill from there 😂)

Exile -> RMPG -> TJBB

Basic Concept: Largest group in their set, tends towards dark colors, darker/gritter themes

Reasoning:

24karats Gold Genesis is the first 24karats release that doesn't include Exile, TJBB literally got some of Exile's old outfits.

All three groups had some amount of 'seasoned dancer' when they formed, with Exile's seasoned dancers being their founders; RMPG's performers came from the PBA (with some, like Kaisei and YamaSho, having prior dance experience from outside of EXPG); and TJBB's performers (for the most part) came from D.League.

TJBB is also the only Neo Exile group to have a proper vocalist/performer split - TJBB's rappers performed at the LDH Expo 2023 performer battle, as the only group from Neo Exile to do so

GENE -> FANTA -> LIL

Basic Concept: Widest variety of concept, swings back and forth between 'wholesome' and 'gritty'

Reasoning:

All three groups tend to give me Vibe Whiplash, especially LIL with that flip from 'Higher' to 'Lollipop'.

A lot of the members also come from EXPG and other such locations. LIL did do iconZ to be formed, but GENE's performers and FANTA's performers were picked - I know FANTA's members were picked from Exile Generations and I can't find anything about GENE's performers being from an audition like the PBA or any of the VBAs

JSB3 -> PsyFe -> Kid Phenomenon

Basic Concept: The "Exile Tribe Standard Seven"

Reasoning:

They're all roughly close to '2 vocalist, 5 performer/rapper' split

Bonus points for PsyFe and KP basically being proteges for JSB3 - PsyFe toured with Omi, while Naoto is the executive producer for KP

Exile the Second -> BBZ -> Wolf Howl Harmony

Basic Concept: More Mature, Romance Related Vibes

Reasoning:

Okay, so this one is the weakest, but I do get the vibe that Wolf Howl Harmony is leaning the most - mature and romantic of the Neo Exile groups (which, considering they're the only group where none of the members are teenagers, is a good thing, in my opinion). BBZ is also the main group from Jr.Exile that I can remember having - gasp shock horror - a female love interest in a MV. And I have seen one Exile the Second concert, but each member danced with a very attractive woman for several songs 😂

Also the first/main group in their set to really depart from the "Exile Tribe Standard 7" - The Second started off with 5 (Shokichi, Nesmith, Tetsuya, Keiji, and Kenchi) before Akira joined, BBZ is the first group to have everyone hold microphones and is actually split 4 vocalists/3 rappers, and Wolf Howl Harmony is 4 people, the smallest Exile Tribe group yet

Another reason why I think Bolshoi does a better Fille du Pharoan:

The ending scene of Mariinsky’s Fille du Pharoan is CRAMMED with every single VBA kid as a caryatid posing, running around with their hands high, and the tiny students blowing kisses in the front. It looks like a school gala-eg “let’s put in as many kids as we can in the ending scene”😂

Meanwhile, Bolshoi has slightly older kids (like 13-15 year olds) coming out and doing some simple partner work in the coda, but it’s mostly corps that’s dancing. Plus the tempo is nicer.

If you know exactly what I’m talking about, let me know, because the Mariinsky version bothers me in so many ways besides this one🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s a cheap way to end it lol I agree. The Bolshoi version is just far superior, more refined, and technically harder 😅 Basically more at par with the ballets we know and love.

Besides the costuming and sets of Mariinsky’s, I really didn’t like the revival.

How Did I Get My Red-White-Red Card (Austrian Residence) As a Startup Founder

“Ok, that was faster than expected.”

I turned to my co-founder, as we just received a congratulations email from my lawyer about my rot-weiss-rot kart getting approved. The time frame from when I applied to when I got the formal approval took just 3 months, which was much faster than the average we have heard before. 

Gotta Love That Bureaucracy

Having lived and worked in both New Zealand and China prior, I had to say that Austria is much more difficult and process-heavy compared to NZ, especially for those who were not EU residence. We were very fortunate as we were getting a lot of help from the local agencies such as ABA, VBA and FFG. If you are a startup founder and new to Austria, I recommend look them up!

Then, why Austria? So many people asked us this question, mostly Austrians. I always start the answers by throwing bouquets at the cultural vibrance and my love for the local classical music. It always bring smiles to their faces. I mean it though. Vienna is such an exquisite city, always ranked high in the top 10 liveable cities in the world, many times No. 1.

But for our establishment, a FinTech startup founded in Shanghai China, Austria is our gateway to the limelight of the European market. Furthermore, in comparison to other European countries, the support in the innovation sector in Austria is phenomenal. From the public funding to the supports from the agencies, to the innovative and professional ecosystem. It literally took us much less time to find our first 10 beta B2B customers than to open a company bank account. 

Bureaucracy is annoying, but the ecosystem? Awesome!

A Little Bit About Me

I was born in Beijing, China. I went to New Zealand to study as a teenager. Graduated from University of Auckland with BSc - Computer Science in 2006. I worked as software developer, business analyst, then project/product manger. I decided to quit my job in the year 2015, to go full-time in entrepreneurship.

The first few ideas did’t work so well, no surprise there though. Then I met my co-founders in China in 2016. In that very year, I went back to Shanghai, China, to work with the team on the new business, Xencio. 16 years after living in New Zealand.

To Start a Company, You Need Residency 

Well, as long as you are not an EU citizen, you cannot really work here, let alone start a company. You can actually cofound a company, but you have to be a shareholder owing less than 50%.

But no worries, there’re 3 ways you could use inorder to obtain the red-white-red card which gives authorization to you to be the managing director, work in your business full time and get medical covers and kids to school just like the locals.

The rule of thumb is, for startup founders, 1 is better than 2, which is also better than 3. but 1 is much harder. So if 1 fails, you try 2, and so on. In this post, i will talk about the Startup Founder Category mostly, because that’s the one I did.

Quite self explanatory, if you are young, tertiary level educated with good english and fair amount of accuaintance with work, you should be eliible with a >50 score. 

In my case, I got total 60 

20 - A university degree (not from Austria) 

10 - Work Experience more than 5 years

20 - English C2

10 - Additional Investment of €50,000, and

10 - Selected to a business incubator in Vienna

I just turned 35 when i applied, too bad I couldn’t get the additional 10 point for age (yeah that age up to 35 means it does not include 35, grrr!!). 

A Lil Hurdle to Get You Started - Frist Chicken and Egg 

Ok, so far so good right? Here comes the fun part:

If you want your application likely to succeed (which you definitely want, right?), you had better have a company already registered. Wait a minute, didn’t I mention earlier you need residency to be the managing director of a GmbH? Exactly! So here you go:

Company <--Dependency--> Director having citizenship or residency

There’re only two possible ways of tackling this: 

1. To apply for red-white-red without having a company (and risking getting rejected), or 

2. To form a company without having residence (the company formation will come to a halt at some stage, but regardless). We chose the second one. 

(actually there is a whole lot to talk about with company formation for non-EU citizens, I will write another blog about it.)

Document Preparation 

While the company formation is underway for me,  I started to prepare my list of documents. 

Let’s start with the easy and pettifogging ones: 

1. Passport and photocopies of passport

2. EU Sized Passport Photos

3. TOFEL Certificates to show sufficient language level (if your citizenship is not from a native German or English speaking countries)

4. Proof of Business Incubator - If you already in one, this is money for old rope. But if you are looking at a foreign friendly incubators to get into, here are some quick recommendations, google them: Global Incubator Network, Vienna Startup Package, Elevate by TheVentury, INiTS, weXelerate, ElevatorLab

5. Proof of Fund - for my case, i need to show a bank statement of more than 25.000 EUR. I also had to show that the new company bank account (Xencio GmbH) has over 50.000 EUR.

Then the slightly more complicated ones:

6. Work Certificates - to show your pertinent work experiences. I literally emailed or LinkedIn messaged all my ex-managers or HR department of my former companies, they were very corporative. Because mine is all from NZ, thus did not need translation into English. Yes English is ample enough for it.

7. New Company Related Files - As company formation was not fully completed, I just submitted all the documents or evidence as could provide. This shows the authority that you are resolute with starting a company, not just saying you would.

8. Business Plan - I will going to a bit more details later about it. you can message me directly to get a business plan for Xencio GmbH which we have submitted for my application.

Comparatively more challenging, these documents need apostille:

(I have documents from NZ and China both needing apostille, I found the one from China to be much harder. Simply because NZ has an E-apostille system, if your home country has it, you’re in luck! For my Chinese files, they need to be translated, notarised and diplomatically apostilled)

9. Marriage Certificate 

10. Criminal / Police Record

11. Birth Certificate

12. University Degrees and Transcripts - After being apostilled, your degrees need to be verified with ENIC NARIC Austria, this copy needs to be in your document too.

Ok this last one is ridiculous:

13. The proof of residential address in Austria 

Yes! You heard right! You Need A Residential Address  - The Second Chicken and Egg

You see, the fact you had to show proof of address as part of your residency application is simply absurd, says the former Minister of Digital and Economical Affairs (https://investaustria.at/en/news/2019/03/red-white-red-card.php). 

What if your application got rejected? What if (and it definitely will be) things gets impeded even after you got approved? Anyway, the only way to maneuver around it is to sign with explicit short to medium term accomodation mainstay or get some local friends who has properties to assist you with. I don’t really want to do any advertisement here, just message me if you want to know the list of these accomodations providers. 

Business Plan, Do's and Don't's

You are an entrepreneur, you know what a good business plan should include. You know, the basics such as:

- Executive Summary - The Problem - Solution - Benefits - Product / Service Description - Market Analysis - Business Development Plan - Competitor Analysis - Financial Planning

As mentioned earlier, please message me to get a copy of our submitted business plan as reference. 

Additional to a good startup business plan, there’re a few more things the authority are looking for: 

1. Micro-economical Benefit - Local employment - so you need to show how your company is going to hire more people in the next 2-3 years. As a startup you need to consider this and make plans for it.

2. Micro-economical Benefit - Concerning Disruption - this one is a little bit counterintuitive. For the authority, If your business is to provide more job opportunities or bring more money to Austria, well that’s just awesome! But if it’s a type of disruption that it simply moves customer from the competitor to you, then it is not considered economically beneficial. This is a fine line though, ideas like uber or airbnb can in theory considered having no micro-economical significance, in subject to how you frame it in your plan. This could be quite tasking

3. Technological innovation - similar to the governmental grants, there is a huge emphasis on technological innovation. The goal is to land more IPs in Austria. In your business plan, the touch on business development and marketing is important, but it cannot be all it is to your business. 

Ready Now? Let’s Submit It!

If you are lucky enough to be from one of the >90 days visa-free countries. You can actually submit your application in Austria. 

For me, applying via a Chinese Passport, even I was in Vienna on a business purpose visa, I had to submit it in China. This makes a huge difference and added additional 1-2 months of diplomatic courier transfer (YES, THAT LONG). 

What Happens After Submission?

The MA35 will do an initial mild check of your documents for sufficiency. Then it will be forwarded to the labour department - AMS. Your case would then be presented and discussed over a jury meeting (this is why the do’s and don’t’s are very important). The jury meeting is the ultimate determination of whether your case is successful or not. It takes up to 8 weeks for a decision to be made by the labour department. 

A notice from the MA35 will be issued that your application is approved, then there will just be more waiting for MA35 to check in detail of all the documents provided.  

Hooray, It’s Approved, Then What?

Again, if you are lucky enough to have a passport that grants you Schengen 90 days visa-free, your red white red card should be ready for collection. For me, unfortunately, I needed to fly back to China again (even though I was in Vienna with a business purpose visa at the time of approval), to apply for a Visa-D so that I could come back to Vienna to collect my red-white-red. 

Ok ok, no more complaining, with all that being done, I finally made it back to Vienna. Picked up the card and business is good to go, hooray!!

Russian students study at VBA for free. Unless things have changed drastically since I was last there, primary and secondary education are free in Russia, period. Training at the academy is funded by the Russian government (food, board, uniforms, etc. aren’t included). However, as of 2018, a limited number of paid placements will also become available per recommendation from the Ministry of Culture. This means that the kids who didn’t make it through the final round of auditions may be able to buy their way in for 400,000 roubles (US$5,892) per annum.

I was re-watching the actual VBA graduation ceremony in 2016 (so, the class with Borodulina and Sevenard), and when they were announcing names, I noticed there were three girls that went (Borodulina, Zolotkyh, Khalimova) before they paused and said something else (I speak very, very little Russian), before announcing more names. I caught the word for diploma, so I could only assume that students are divided by diploma? What diploma did Borodulina, Zolotkyh, and Khalimova receive instead?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but what does it mean when VBA students list their grade level with a /? e.g. 5/2

The first number stands for the student’s ballet grade, while the second stands for the academic grade. Children join VBA after completing 4 years in a regular state school - that’s one of the requirements of admission - so that when the new academic year begins, they enter the 5th grade academically and the 1st grade ballet-wise: 1/5, 2/6, 3/7, 4/8, 5/9. 

After 5/9, the classification changes: 6/I, 7/II, 8/III. The roman numerals stand for “levels” or “courses”. Students receive their highschool diplomas when they complete 5/9. After this, they are considered “undergraduates”.

If a student fails academically, but passes all the dance, will they be removed from the academy/not be allowed to graduate?

I’m going to make an educated guess and say that while they won’t be expelled, they won’t be able to advance past 5/9 (see above), as they need a highschool diploma to enrol in an undergraduate course. I could be wrong though. I’m not very clear on Russia’s current education legislation.

In photos of Eleonora Sevenard and her classmates in their last year at VBA, I noticed that while rehearsing or in classes they wear these grey sleeveless tops. Sevenard's top, however, had two black lines crossing around the middle of the bodice. In pictures of Maria Khoreva's class, her classmates all don the basic grey top whereas Khoreva's has the two black lines. This had me wondering, is the top with the lines meant to distinguish the star pupil of that class?

Those lines have been discussed here a few times before. I think the consensus is that they are simply a design feature of some Grishko leotards and don’t actually mean anything.

It's so strange that we know a little bit about half of the 8th class because NT posted the exam results, but for Julia Kasenkova’s graduating class, all I know is that Sonya Romanovich is top of her class and that she’s friends with the Italian Magda Scaccabarozzi.

As for the girls in the 7th year, I think we know almost nothing—I haven’t even seen any exam photos from Kovaleva’s class. I’m not sure who’s teaching the parallel class either. Maybe something happened, or the girls are just very private, which is fair enough.

But with the girls in the 6th year, it feels like I know them personally! They’re always posting, and I swear I've basically figured out who’s friends with whom, and so on.

I do have a question, though. Last year, when they were in the 5th year, there were three parallel classes. Is it normal to have three parallel classes in the 5th year? Or was it an exceptionally strong year, so they didn’t dismiss as many students, leaving them with three parallel classes instead of the usual two?

NT is advertising himself, that's why we only see his own classes. A few years after he became director, he forbade all videos from classes and exams to be posted online because they are a part of the methodology and shouldn't be published. A few years later his own 8th year exam video was posted on the VBA official account, and it's only been his classes ever since. That is on purpose. He is advertising his own work, his own choreography, he'll never post Kovaleva, Vasilieva, Kasenkova, or any other teacher's class.

To be honest, I prefer the not posting approach, from posting all the time, in general for kids, I find it very strange when they post everything about their lives online. I definitely think that posting so much opens them to criticism from people, of course people compare Aziz and Furman, because they see so much of them. It's not the girls' fault, but it would not happen if we didn't even know their names, like with year 7 like you said.

I think it's normal to have 3 classes in year 5 and 2 in year 6. If there are enough students passing the exams there's no reason to have 2 classes of 15 people instead of 3 classes of 10. Typically though people get kicked out before year 6, I don't think I've ever seen 3 classes in the upper school. I could be wrong though, I don't follow students closely (or much at all). As far as I know, there's no cap of how many students a year can have.

I think it’s cool and exciting for the 1st and 2nd year VBA kids to be in Nutcracker! Especially when they choose the Little Mashas and the Pas de Trois kids, you can tell that they’re among the top of their class if they get those roles. Sevenard and Khoreva were in Pas de Trois years ago and now they’re basically becoming the top dancers of their generation.

Do you have any clue if certain years get certain roles in Mariinsky productions? From my understanding/knowledge:

Year 1-2: most child roles in Nutcracker, the marionettes and street kids in Don Q, I think Arabian boys in Raymonda? Also the Streams (Underwater Kingdom) in the recent Fille du Pharoan reconstruction were younger VBA girls. Finally, I think the younger students usually play trolls, crows and Tatar children in Shurale.

Year 3-4: child servants and the two little Manu girls in Bayadere, Elves in Midsummer, I think the lace dolls in Fairy Doll? Also Little Cupids in Don Q dream scene, most child roles in Sleeping Beauty and Corsaire too.

I think it’s really cool too! It’s also nice to see performers who aren’t yet disillusioned 😂 The kids are always excited to just be there and that’s always refreshing. My favorite are the ones featured in the dryads scene, soooo adorable.

The roles you’ve mentioned are the ones I know as well. Basically, I think years 1-4 get the most “stage time.” As they get closer to graduating, they get less. Likely because they have more lead roles in the actual Vaganova performances. I don’t think the older kids do any corps work. I may be wrong, but I can’t imagine the logistics of that if they do.

There were a lot more difficulties than what was written in Bibiri, so I hope the videos will present this visually.

Commencing the audtion

 I think the reason why I was told EXILE would end was because we were top ranking artists, and I agreed with that reasoning. Our team was well loved by almost a million fans, so if someone from the all-important vocalists’ section left, we would never be able to regain that former glory. In the history of the music industry, this was a common fact.

When I was in this dilemma, I would always go back to where we started.Back to why I did this in the first place. What did I do this for? How much faith did I have to go back to basics?

What was the motto of EXILE?

These were some of the things that came to our minds when the staff were brainstorming about the audition.

[The importance of holding on to your dreams]

From the moment we formed EXILE, we held on to this motto and went on with our activities.So what would happen when we have an open recruitment for a vocalist in this top-ranked group? We would be choosing a new vocalist for EXILE from a pool of people who can take up the challenge regardless of skill. The person chosen would become a member of this top-ranked group overnight. He would be able to stand alongside Atsushi, singing in front of thousands of other spectators.This sort of dream must sound like an impossible feat.

“How would you be able to use this audition to pick out a new member?”

This was a serious question I posed to the gathered members. At first, I thought the members would not be in great favor of this idea. While there was no opposition, I felt that the idea didn’t stick clearly into their minds.

In spite of that, I had absolute faith that I would be able to stir something up among the members.

At any rate, this was a modern day Cinderella Story. The story of a normal guy who was suddenly chosen one day to stand in front of millions of people in a dome arena. If we manage to open this up to the public, the fans would willingly open their ears to this audition. In addition, the winner of this audition would probably receive a lot of support. I felt that it was a very EXILE-like method to promote the idea of the importance of holding on to your dreams.The reason why losing a member of our team hit us so hard was because of the love our fans had for us. That was even if we did get an amazing new member. Or rather, the more amazing the member was, the harder the backlash might be. For those who put EXILE close to their hearts, they can be uncomfortable with a new member. EXILE feels much like a family, so if one of the family is replaced by someone else, people would never say things like “Yay! We’ve got a new member in the family!” Once there is a hole left behind, no one else can fill it up again, even if that person was Michael Jackson. I feel that the fans will never be able to come to terms with it.

I understand that very well myself. Even if there was a way to heal this sense of loss, I would feel the same way as the fans do.

In other words, when it comes down to it, everyone would the same feeling of loss while trying to search for the new member….If we continued to think like this, EXILE would no longer exist. That’s why, we couldn’t just stop there. Similar to how Shun chose his own path in life, we also have to move forward with our own.

That’s why, we needed to find that new member.

In order to convey our intent to our fans, we had to think of a way to make the audition easy to understand. Based on our situation at the time, we thought it would be safe to choose the new member within our own confines without telling the rest of the fans, and then choose a day to make the official announcement. I felt that if we do that, the new member would be beaten with a lot of criticism and end up becoming powerless.

….well, with this in mind, I took every opportunity to talk to the members.

While I did say that, it’s not like it was very hard to talk to them. Our conversations went something like: “Won’t it be nuts if a normal kid suddenly became a top selling artiste?” and “If we open the audition to the public, won’t everyone would come and support it?” We were in the process of trying to get the members to get a spark going in this idea.

Although we weren’t sure if this was going to work, by the end of it the members and the staff were all enamored by the idea of choosing a new member.

I’m not entirely sure what happened, but it might be because at this point, everyone felt like they wanted to ride on the idea. I felt that way as well, so we had no other choice but to go for it. Since everything has gone well up to this point, we could feign composure a little. However, we had no idea if we would be able to go through with the audition well or even be able to find a suitable talent for this role. If we weren’t able to find a good vocalist, it would mean there would be a high chance that EXILE would end its run.

As I said the first time, I was really scared to death.

Others have told me that my ideas are too daring or naïve or absolutely off the hook, but that is completely beside the point. To put it crudely, because I was wet behind the ears, or rather, ignorant about the ways of the world, I couldn’t go about this too confidently. I was nervous to the core. I didn’t have complete confidence that this audition would be successful, so I really had no room for error. I didn’t want to fail, so I did all the necessary arrangements that I could and took all measures.

Feeling that this period was unstable, Akira joined us formally as a member, and with that, that was the current state of things within EXILE. I was always wondering when Akira would join EXILE.

While it was great we were open with the fans about beginning the audition and the process of choosing the new member, more importantly, we needed to become an impressive, captivating form of entertainment at the same time. We were first and foremost, entertainers. No matter what we did, we must hold true to that role. Also, if we had a new member that was chosen after a lackluster show, the fans won’t be inclined to support them.

We decided to hold the final audition battle for the new member at the Budoukan, the place where special memories were made.

We needed to hold the final live as a raw sort of entertainment that would make the crowd overflow with emotion, or else we would not achieve real success. To establish this kind of entertainment, we had to take extreme care with our plans.

My biggest worry was, even after gathering the fans together at the final audition and giving an emotional performance, whether or not the winning candidate would stay. We could say big things about appealing to the public to scout for a new vocalist, but from the beginning, we didn’t even have the slightest idea how many applications there would be. If you ask me, I didn’t believe we would be able to find a candidate who would be blessed with the kind of talent Atsushi’s partner had. Or rather, would it even be simple to find such a person? I was rather uneasy. Even if there was a candidate with that kind of potential, we wouldn’t know if such a person would be able to make it past the preliminaries. And even if he did make it past the prelims, we wouldn’t know whether the candidate would be able to stand on the actual Budoukan stage and perform up to expectations. If this candidate was bad, then that would be because we were reckless about the whole audition.

Similar to that of a sports competition, we had seeded candidates like Nesmith and TAKA (from DEEP) who were experienced artistes, so it wouldn’t be strange if they became part of EXILE, but the reason why we had people with such abilities in the midst of this audition was because it was necessary for the Budoukan’s final audition become the best and most exciting form of entertainment.

I had the mindset that we would be able to hold the final battle at the Budoukan as a form of entertainment, no matter how many were left behind, because we wanted to recognize their talents and support their goals.

However, though we worked hard to prepare the perfect event, the moment the floodgates were opened, the audition was successful beyond anyone’s imagination.

The number of applicants for the audition amounted up to almost ten thousand people.

There were applicants lining up all the way up to the edge of town.

And among those applicants was Tasaki-kun (TAKAHIRO).

In all my years, because I’ve come across many walks of life, I had built up data and my baseless confidence. So when I saw Tasaki-kun, I thought he was the one.He was just some ordinary guy, but at the moment when I first heard his voice during the first round of audition, I thought it couldn’t be anyone but this guy. He had the atmosphere that I had always dreamed of.

When I asked around, he coincidentally turned out to be a friend of a friend, meaning that he got here via connections, but that didn’t mean I could go and give him special treatment. I remember that throughout the 2nd and 3rd judging round, whenever Tasaki-kun started singing I was praying hard that he wouldn’t lose.

No matter how good one is, there was still a chance they won’t make it. I felt that this guy would definitely do well if he became part of EXILE, but there was no telling if the other members would feel the same way as I did. But then, I’m just a paranoid kind of person, and at the end of it he hung on and did his best to become a member of EXILE.

That person was Tasaki Takahiro, or whom we know as TAKAHIRO.

I said stuff like “Won’t it be nuts if a normal kid suddenly became a top selling artiste?”, but as I watched over TAKAHIRO’s growth I once again started getting concerned whether he would be able to stand on the stage at the dome, in front of a few million people, with that huge amount of pressure.

TAKAHIRO managed to put all of that out of the way excellently, and he became the new wave of change in EXILE. From the time of the audition to the present, his growth was surprising to even himself, and his addition to the team brought about a huge evolution in EXILE. Following his entry into EXILE, making up 7 of us, another reaction started to take place, like the metamorphosis of a pupa into a butterfly, and something else new was born.

You could say that our lives have been changed through the audition.

The audition allowed us to have a chance to get close to our fans and our contribution to society. The members of EXILE had decided to hold a face-to-face audition, regardless of the number of applicants. So when the nationwide-held first judging came around we met all 10 thousand of the applicants. The same was also applied to the second and third round of judging. We believed that we couldn’t just choose one person out of the thousands of applicants to be EXILE’s vocalists. We just had to meet every single one of these applicants.

It took a really long time, but that was an amazing experience.

There were many sorts of people who applied for the audition. Naturally, there were also some who applied as a joke, but there was a greater meaning to that once we met up with these people.

The rumors of the audition had created such a huge impact. The news and mass media might have picked up on the audition, but it was surprising how this news was spread word-from-mouth, independent of the mass media. Thinking about it now, this was to be expected.

“I wanted to sing in front of EXILE”

Said one applicant, but I wonder how many friends he shared this with. It wouldn’t be wrong to assume that these friends have shared this to other friends too.

“My friend is also attending this audition”.

That friend might have told their friends, and that set of friends might have told other friends, and so on.

“My friend’s boyfriend is going for the audition too.”

If you consider this chain of friends, a single applicant could share this to about a 100 other people.

That means if you have ten thousand applicants, they can spread the news to almost a million people solely through word-of-mouth.

Also, this wasn’t like any ordinary news. This meant those standing at the audition venue and the raw emotions of those singing their hearts out in front of us will be broadcasted to a million people.

If the criteria for entry was something simple like “Males 18 years old and up”, there’ll definitely be all shapes and sizes of people coming to audition. There would even be a considerable number of people coming in wheelchairs.

Many people came, holding on to their various dreams, to let us hear their voices.

I was truly happy about this. At the same time, we were really encouraged by their dreams and passions. This also made us discover our roots and our substance once again.

In the end, deep within ourselves, we all held on to the importance of having a dream in mind. It’s not that we weren’t encouraged by the initial success, but by being able to work together with so many people, this went on to become a more regular and larger event.

In 2010, we held an audition to search for the vocalists for Sandaime J Soul brothers, and in 2011 we held auditions for female vocalists and dancers. We collected nearly 30 thousand applicants. Through this, the vocals for Sandaime J Soul brothers, and many other female vocalists and performers for the current E-girls were born.

Then in 2013, we launched an audition to scout for artistes who could do activities around the world. The applicants who made it would have the privilege to spend 3 years in New York to learn about the music industry. It was very exciting to have a not-so-distant future on our minds, and to produce artistes who can contribute to the world around them.

Thank you! Indeed, it appears that, after only spending a few months at the Mariinsky, Alexandra has moved to Tatar Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. She sounds happy. The basic gist of what she’s saying is that although Mariinsky is a wonderful theatre and many dancers love it, she felt out of place, and it’s important to feel like you belong. Mariinsky wasn’t right for her. She says that TAOBT feels like home, and that at the end of the day it’s not “the brand” that matters, but the people.
